THE WINE SALESMAN
Adventures and Secrets from a Napa Valley Insider
BRUCE MACUMBER
Before Napa Valley became one of the world’s most celebrated wine regions, it was a place of bold ambition, pioneering personalities, and extraordinary opportunity. Bruce Macumber was there as it all unfolded.
In The Wine Salesman, Macumber takes readers behind the scenes of Napa Valley’s remarkable transformation during its early golden era, sharing firsthand encounters with the visionaries, entrepreneurs, and winemakers who helped shape an industry still recovering from disease, Prohibition, and the Great Depression.
His journey begins in the early 1960s, from college and rigorous sales training to influential positions with Gallo, where he served as Field Marketing Manager and Manager of Distributor Relations. He later joined Sterling Vineyards as Director of Sales and Vice President, National Sales Manager, overseeing its sales operations.
Over the years, Macumber represented some of Napa Valley’s most notable wineries, including Chateau Montelena, Joseph Phelps, Caymus Vineyards, Stags’ Leap, Far Niente, and Freemark Abbey. By 1985, he had represented more than 20 percent of Napa Valley’s approximately 150 wineries—an extraordinary vantage point from which to witness the region’s rise.
Spanning more than three decades, his memoir follows his adventures from Napa Valley’s wine country to the international stage, including establishing import and export businesses and moving to Paris to introduce Napa Valley wines to France.
Rich with personal recollections, industry insights, and the relationships forged along the way, The Wine Salesman offers an insider’s perspective on a defining chapter in American wine history. Macumber remains close to many of Napa Valley’s pioneering figures. Now retired, he lives near Palm Springs, California.
